Skills for Engagement - Health and Social Care

Having secured funding from Health Education South West, between April and December 2015 South West Forum will be designing and delivering an integrated programme of support to the heath sector workforce in Somerset, Devon and Cornwall on patient and public involvement and service co-design.

The programme will be available to all health and social care providers in the public, voluntary and independent sectors as well as organisations with a strategic planning, support or monitoring role in the health and social care field. It will be designed to meet the needs of those with a strategic responsibility for engagement, front line staff and those implementing and managing engagement activities.

UPDATE! The programme has now been finalised and bookings are being taken on our events pages:

Engaging young people and young carers - Wednesday 9th September - Exeter

Engaging adults of working age - Thursday 24th September - Taunton

Engaging people in rural communities - Friday 2nd October - Newquay

Engagement through empowerment: reaching people with learning disabilities - Tuesday 6th October - Exeter

Experience based co-design - Wednesday 21 October - Taunton - TBC

Engagement through empowerment: reaching BME communities - Wednesday 4th November - Plymouth

Social media: its role in engagement - Friday 20th November - Torquay

The programme is likely to include the following elements, with specialist organisations assisting us in designing and delivering specific parts:

  • Core training on the principles and practice of good engagement and co-design.

  • Specialist workshops on engaging particular communities and user groups (e.g. young people, specific BAME communities, migrant workers etc).

  • Case study workshops – focussing on specific innovations and good practice examples from both within and outside the South West.

  • Learning opportunities focussing on evaluating and measuring the impact of engagement.

  • Action Learning for one or more cohorts of workers – ideally from a range of different organisations and agencies.

  • Peer support - establishment and facilitation of networking mechanisms designed to enable workers to exchange thinking, practice and ideas.

  • Train the trainer opportunities to build capacity in appropriate agencies and organisations.

  • One or more conference or seminar style events that programme participants have designed themselves.
